April 25 – The Other Giants

Everyone knows the iconic story of David’s triumph over the giant Goliath.  But before David slung his sling in victory, he had to overcome some other giants lurking around on the battlefield that day.

1. The Giant of Cause.  Not only did David face the adversary of the Philistines, he had to overcome the apathy of Israel.  When he arrived on the scene, no one in the camp of Israel wanted to fight; they were ready to succumb to the hand of the enemy.  David’s spirit was stirred when he saw their lethargy and asked the question “Is there not a cause?”

2. The Giant of Criticism.  David’s intent was challenged.  His brothers accused him of being mischievous and irresponsible.  His motives and his methods were criticized by his own family.  He had to get past the hurtful feelings and slay the words from those closest to him.

3. The Giant of Conformity.  Once David convinced Saul to let him fight, he was forced to try on the armor of the king.  This artillery was not proven nor did it fit.

These giants were slain before David ever faced Goliath. He rose to his feet with purpose, he moved beyond the hurtful words of his allies, and he sought not the approval of man.  By faith, he overcame the other giants.
