April 14 – Sleeping in Church

Have you ever meet someone who slept in church?  You probably have a particular person in mind right now that naps frequently at the House of God.  It used to personally offend me to look out and see people sleeping while I preached until one day I read in Scripture where Jesus had the same experience.

As a matter of fact, those who slept on Jesus were His closest friends, and it was during the most agonizing hour of His life.  Instead of staying awake and staying by His side, they nodded, they blinked, they drifted off in slumber.  Their natural state of rest mirrored their spiritual lethargy as they would soon deny their relationship with Christ.

Sleeping in church may sound like a cute and funny notion, but the truth is, those who cannot stay engaged in worship with Christ may find themselves in spiritual trouble after the service is over.  They may find themselves walking at a distance with Peter, or turning their hearts away from following Christ.  I rarely see people falling sleeping at ball games, concerts, or recreational activities; probably because they are engaged with what is going on.  Here is a good remedy for spiritual slumber: make sure your heart is in tune with God’s and then intentionally enter His House with a desire to worship Him and hear from His Word.
