Martha is your typical overachiever. She loves to keep a list, get things done, and move to the next task. She is always working, always busy, always serving. To say the least, she has a competitive drive. One of her biggest problems is that she is always comparing herself with other people. On the surface she is the queen of accomplishment, but underneath she is insecure and anxious.
Martha has a sister who is completely opposite. Mary is curious, she is inquisitive. She’s more interested in building relationships than empires. It’s not that Mary is lazy; she has just prioritized her life differently. She seems to be completely oblivious to the competition, but not Martha; she is always looking to outdo her sister. The angst in Martha’s heart was finally revealed when she came to Jesus about her sister’s apparent apathy toward the kitchen. Jesus, knowing the condition of the calculated sister, called her out, “Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: But the one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen the good part…”
Too often we miss out on the blessings of God because we are busy comparing our lives with other people. When you value or diminish your worth by the actions of others, you position yourself toward misery. True worth is only discovered at the feet of Jesus.
