During the days of Christ a rabbi had many stringent requirements for his students.  An impressive resume was needed just to be in consideration.   The student had to have an extensive working knowledge of Scripture, be in line with the traditional Law, and live an exemplary lifestyle as required by the Sanhedrin.  The “application” process was tedious and oftentimes the rabbi would reject those who initially applied.  The student became the “identity” of the rabbi; therefore, to safeguard his religious character and moral integrity the rabbi chose carefully and oftentimes selfishly.  

     So when Jesus called Matthew, who sat at the seat of customs and was a hated tax collector, it must have been shocking to His colleagues.  There was no entry exam, no long arduous process of inspection, no fine-tooth combing.  Jesus simply said to this poor, insipid man, “Follow me.”  Matthew was not looking for Jesus, he submitted no application to this Rabbi, but still he was invited.  The “publican” became a “pupil.” 

     The Lord is still calling men to follow Him. He invites us to Himself and offers a life-changing adventure.  Accept the greatest invitation ever given- the invitation to follow Christ and be His disciple.
