January 20 – A Letter from God

According to Hebrews 1:2, Christ Jesus is the “express image” of God.  This concept can be illustrated through the ancient practice of sealing a letter.  Whenever a king would send an official document to another land he would always take his signet ring, dip it in ink, and press the image of his ring upon the letter.  The king’s mark would be the official token of his authentication and approval of the correspondence.  Having the mark upon the letter was just as authoritative and official as if the king were present himself.

Christ is the Word of God who became flesh and dwelled among us.  The Great God of Glory sent His Son, who bore the mark of the King.  Being the “express image” of God, Jesus showed the world a glimpse of God’s Person.

When we encounter Christ we encounter the divine.  Christ was God’s official and final “letter” to the world.  The writer of Hebrews records, “God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son.”  Christ is not only the mark of the King, He is also the message of the King.  Now that’s a letter worth reading!
