The way we respond to adversity displays our character and integrity. Job was a man who was memorable for his godly testimony; and Job’s righteousness was manifested during his weakest moments. Having been criticized by his companions, Job declared, “But he knoweth the way that I take; and when he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold” (Job 23:10). Job declared three wonderful truths:
The Providence of God is Real. “But he knoweth the way that I take.” Randy Alcorn says, “Your state of mind determines whether the sovereignty of God comforts you or threatens you.” God knows the path we are on, and He knows where we are headed. He is guiding the way.
The Purpose of God is Refining. “…and when he hath tried me…” In his book Stewarding Life, Paul Chappell declares, “Trials are the very spotlights that illuminate our need for grace.” Trials are designed to bring us to the place where we are forced to trust God. God forms our faith in the fire of the furnace to further our fellowship with Him.
The Purging of God is Rewarding. “I shall come forth as gold.” And certainly Job did! At the end of his trial, his family came to assist him by bringing him gold. God doubled his fortune and honored his faith.
