It was the last shared meal with His disciples. Jesus revealed to His blue-collared believers the pain and suffering He would soon endure. After supper was ended the Lord did something that would surprise them even more.
He stood among them, removed His outer garment and girded Himself with a towel. The Lord Jesus Christ assumed the lowest possible position in Hebrew culture. The Master became the Servant. He bowed His righteous knees to the ground and took a basin of water and began to wash the disciple’s feet. Can you imagine such a thing? Holy hands, filthy feet?
Jesus washed their feet not only to make them clean, but to provide an example for all believers. The Lord did not expect them to wash His feet; this act was a pattern for us to wash the feet of others.
To have the mind, ministry, and motives of Christ we must be willing to surrender our lives in service and humility. We will never be more like Christ than when we serve others. And we must realize something – when we take the towel of service we are going to get dirty. Those filthy feet of the disciples needed the holy hands of the Divine. Go ahead and get your hands dirty – Jesus did.
