In the book of James we are asked a very important question, “What is your life?” The writer was not trying to wax eloquent or engage in some philosophical debate; no, he quickly answered his own question with these words, “It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” He was not speaking of the substance of life; he was speaking of the shortness of life.

The singular is in mind. We do not have “vapors” of life; we have only one to live. Fred Smith said, “You only live once, but if you work it right, once is enough.” I would contend the only way to “work it right” is to receive forgiveness of your sins through faith in Christ. The earlier in life you find the Lord, the fuller your life becomes.

No one fully comprehends the brevity of life until one comes to the end. We look back and realize that James was right, a vapor is fleeting. Its benediction is as short-lived as its appearance. Therefore, to really live life, we must live life today. This moment is the only moment promised. James also said, “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow.” Yesterday cannot be redone, tomorrow is not promised, so today is the only opportunity to bring meaning and purpose to this fleeting life. James gave us the measurement; it is up to you and me to define the meaning.
