December 27 – The Chief Cornerstone

The True Meaning Behind Jesus the Cornerstone

In ancient practices and construction, the cornerstone was a large boulder or rock that kept the entire structure in alignment. From the cornerstone, the other stones and materials were put into place. This large stone was the foundation of the building.

In Isaiah 28:16, the Lord Himself said, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.” Jesus, the Chief Cornerstone was rejected of men. Though tried, proven, precious, and holy just, He was reviled by the builders. Peter declared in his epistle, “And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed” (1 Peter 2:8).

Jesus came unto His own, and His own received Him not. He was despised and rejected of men. Yet, those who believe on Him are lively, living stones. We are a building for the glory of God. Our foundation is none other than Jesus, and we are joined together by Him. It is Jesus that brings alignment and harmony to our lives. It is Jesus, the Foundation of Salvation that gives shelter and protection from the howling storms of sin. As the songwriter said, “On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand!”
