April 21 – Following Christ

In the ninth chapter of Luke, Jesus encountered three different men who sought to be a follower of Christ.  In response to their pursuit, Jesus gave them a description of the life of a true disciple.  In essence, He told these men they would have to be willing to follow the Lord wherever, whenever, and whatever.

These three encounters remind us that being a disciple of Jesus Christ is not easy. As a matter of fact, it is anything but easy.  Taking the cross, denying the flesh, and dying to self is a continual and constant challenge for the believer, yet it is our obligation and duty in being a genuine disciple of Christ.  Dallas Willard said of the subject, “There is nothing in what Jesus himself or his early followers taught that suggests you can decide just to enjoy forgiveness at Jesus’ expense and have nothing more to do with him.”

What is taught in most religious circles is contrary to the teachings of Christ and His requirements for discipleship.  Finding our life is in direct relation to losing it.  According to Christ, there are certain mandates given to follow Him. For the next three days, we will consider these various men and their encounter with the Lord.  We will discover what it means to follow Jesus wherever, whenever, and whatever.
