Kadesh-Barnea will forever be remembered as a place of mediocrity and regret for the children of Israel. It was there that Moses sent out the spies to view the land of Canaan. If you will recall, twelve men were ordered to evaluate the region and bring a report back to Moses. After their adventure, they returned with a single cluster of grapes so large it had to be carried by two men. You could say it was just an appetizer of what God wanted them to have: a land flowing with milk and honey.
Instead of being excited about the promise of God, ten out of the twelve spies were fearful because of the giants in the land. They made a false report of Canaan and refused to enter therein. Those men and their families died instantly and the children of Israel wondered in the wilderness for the next forty years. All of them died before they reached Canaan, only their children and grandchildren gained entrance. The only men who inherited Canaan after the forty years of travel were the two spies who originally had faith in God’s Word, Joshua and Caleb.
When we settle for the grapes, it is certain we will miss the main meal. For a majority of Israel, the grapes were enough; but the hunger of Joshua and Caleb could not be satisfied with a mere appetizer. Don’t settle for anything less than the perfect will of God for your life.
