April 6 – How to Get Wisdom

Theodore Roosevelt said, “Wisdom is nine-tenths a matter of being wise in time; most of us are wise after the event.”  It is true; being wise is demonstrated by knowing what to say, or what to do, in a proper context of timing.  The problem, as Roosevelt pointed out, is that we rarely connect our mind, heart, and words with the right events –only wisdom affords such an opportunity.  But how do we get it?

1. Wisdom comes from Scripture.  Without a working knowledge of God’s Word you will never understand life in its right context.  Scripture gives us a proper world view (God’s view).

2. Wisdom comes from failures.  The question is not “will we fail?” But rather, “what will we learn when we fail?” Our mistakes afford us the opportunity to know what is right, and also to correct what is wrong.

3. Wisdom comes from learning of others.  Solomon said, “Hear ye children, the instruction of a father; and attend to know understanding. (Proverbs 4:1).  God has given us teachers and instructors for our benefit.

4. Wisdom comes from desire.  Without a thirst for wisdom, it is likely you will not pursue it.

5. Wisdom ultimately comes from God.  If any man lacks wisdom, he should seek it from the Lord, for He gives freely to those who ask in faith.  If we do not have it, it is not because the Lord fails to give it.
