All of my children play baseball, and to be quite boastful, they are all really good. So the other day when my youngest hit a grand-slam homer, needless to say, I was standing and cheering him on. As he rounded third base into home plate, all the parents stood in ovation as he brought his team ahead by three points. One lady in particular stood in front of me cheering and asked a question to her friend, “Who is that kid?”
The proud papa in me wanted to quickly shout out, “That’s my boy!” But I was distracted from doing such. I was distracted because the lady had on a team-shirt that had my kid’s name on it. I thought to myself, “You have been to all of these games, you wear my son’s name on your shirt, and you are even cheering him home; but you do not know him.”
Christianity is full of the same kind of people. By association they wear the name of Jesus, they have a “fish” on their vehicle, they even come to church and cheer His name on. But when it gets down to it, they don’t really know Christ, and more sadly, Christ doesn’t know them. The Lord said, “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven…and then I will profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” Jesus wants to be more than a name on your shirt; He wants to be the Savior of your soul!
