March 15 – Las Vegas Letdown

An elderly missionary returned to the United States after being on foreign soil for over thirty years.  Arriving in California he boarded a bus to the Midwest to stay with his daughter.  The first stop was in Las Vegas.  He decided to stay over to view the sights and sounds of the city.

As he walked down the streets he heard the loud music, saw the grand hotels, and was disoriented by all the flashing lights.  He heard the clinking of the slot machines, saw the advertisements of famous celebrities, and witnessed thousands of people drinking and laughing.  Overwhelmed by the parties, people, and promiscuity he went back into his hotel room, opened the curtain to view the city, and cried out in prayer, “God, I thank you that I haven’t seen anything I want more than you.”

The world has nothing to offer the child of God.  The songwriter Rhea Miller said, “I’d rather have Jesus than silver and gold; I’d rather be His than have riches untold.  I’d rather have Jesus than houses or lands; I’d rather be led by His nail-pierced hand.”  A life committed to service and surrender will never be satisfied with the glitz and glamour of this world.  The lights will fade, the music will cease, and the riches will diminish.  Anything less than Jesus is a letdown.
