January 11 – The God Who Doesn’t Sleep

Occasionally while I am reading it happens.  My mind will drift far from the page.  Before I realize it my eyelids become very heavy, and I find myself in a struggle to stay awake.  I will try to stir myself by blinking but within just a few seconds I am nodding back into the dark recesses of slumber.  I go back and forth resisting and succumbing, resisting and succumbing until I finally give in, put the book aside and drift off.  Sometimes the urge is so strong, and my will is so weak, that even if I wanted to I couldn’t fight off the sleep.

God doesn’t have that problem.  He never has, and He never will.

His eyes never grow heavy, His Spirit never gets tired, His mind never drifts.  The psalmist said, “He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.  Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep” (Psalm 121:3-4).

As a sleeping child finds solace in the arms of his father, even so, we as children of the living God, should find rest in knowing that God continually watches over us.  We need not worry if He is taking a heavenly break or a celestial nap.  He continually guards and protects His children. I can sleep safely each night knowing that my God never does!
