Nicolas Herman, or Brother Lawrence as he was commonly known, was a dishwasher in the institution where he lived. He often spoke about washing those dishes for the glory of God. When finished with his menial work in the kitchen, he would fall down on his knees and thank God for the opportunity to serve. He said, “I wouldn’t as much as pick up a straw from the floor, but I did it for the glory of God.”
You may think this sounds silly or extreme, but hear the words of the apostle Paul, “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all for the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). The same sentiment is applied in Colossians 3:17, “Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
Glorifying God is typically an act achieved in the mundane. We tend to think that God is only honored when we lift our hands or voices in some corporate experience of worship. But the truth is, we have the opportunity to glorify God in every moment of life, even in the most boring and seemingly unproductive. Today you have a great opportunity set before you: to glorify God in all that you do. Transform each mundane moment into a cathedral of praise by honoring and glorifying God in all things.
