December 14 – Clutter

It happens every year.  We go through our closets, clean out our basement, and straighten up our cupboards. It is amazing how many things we accumulate over a short-period of time. And most of the items we gather have little or no value.  It is called clutter, and it takes up a lot of space in our lives.

The dictionary defines clutter as: a collection of things lying in an untidy or unorganized manner.  If you are like most people, you have clutter somewhere in your home.  Old, useless receipts in a drawer. Stacks of magazines piled in the bottom of a closet.  Clothes that need to be given to charity. Expired cans of food that just sit on the shelves.  Yes, clutter is all around us, and it prevents us from utilizing our space properly and efficiently.

The same holds true when it comes to our spirituality.  Our relationship with the Lord can become crowded with clutter.  Before we know it, we have been overtaken by “things” and “stuff.”   Most of the time, these “things” have little meaning or value, but they do exist.  They pile up, get in the way, and occupy valuable space.  Occasionally, we should go through the closets of our life and rid the clutter from our hearts.
