October 3 – We are Never Alone

I recently read a story about a preacher who was out of town and drove his car into a ditch in a very rural area. A local farmer came to help with his big strong horse, named Buddy. He hitched Buddy up to the car and yelled, “Pull, Nellie, pull!” Buddy didn’t move.  Then the farmer hollered, “Pull, Buster, pull!” Buddy didn’t respond.  Once more the farmer commanded, “Pull, Rocky, pull!” But nothing happened.

Then the farmer nonchalantly said, “Pull, Buddy, pull!”The horse easily dragged the car out of the ditch. The preacher was most appreciative but very curious. He asked the farmer why he called his horse by the wrong name three times.  The farmer said, “Oh, Buddy is blind and if he thought he was the only one pulling, he wouldn’t even give it a try.”

It is hard to be the only one bearing the load.  In life there are times it feels like no one else knows our burden or cares about the weight that we carry; but may I remind you that Christ is always with us.  Jesus said, “Come unto me, all ye that are heavy-laden and I will give you rest.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”  He invites us to “yoke” up with Him, meaning that we walk together with Him and He helps us pull and bear the weight.   What great joy in knowing that with Christ we are never alone!
