October 2 – Showers of Blessing

I love the smell of rain.  I often associate it with memories from my childhood when I played out in the southern, summer storms.  What is interesting about the smell of rain is that there is actually no odor to the rain at all.  What we often smell is the oil from flowers and plants that is emitted just before the rain begins.  To absorb the most possible moisture, flowers and plants often expand or open their cells which produce the actual fragrance.  This fragrance is the smell of vegetation soaking up the rain.

In the eighty-first psalm the Lord said, “Open wide thy mouth, and I will fill it.”  The promises of God are true.  We can trust in His daily provision for our lives.  However, there are some promises that He gave us that are conditional.  According to the above psalm, the reception of His blessing is based upon our willingness to do something opening wide our mouths.  Just as a plant opens to receive the rain, we too must open wide our lives to receive the blessings of God.

Too often we expect God to do something without us doing anything at all.  He wants us to have the victorious, abundant life; but in order to experience such victory we must be willing to let Him fill us.  Open up wide smells like there could be showers of blessings on the way!
