A story is told of a wealthy French industrialist who bestowed his inheritance to a leech.  Capitaine Furrer was so appalled at the insatiable greed of his family that he refused to leave his inheritance to such a selfish clan.  Instead, he appointed his fortune of coal mines and textile mills to a blood-sucking leech as a testimony against his self-seeking heirs. 

     This may sound ridiculous, but it is similar to what God has done for us.  Isaac Watts penned down these iconic words in 1885:

Alas and did my Savior bleed?

And did my Savior die?

Would He devote that sacred head

For such a worm as I?

     We were undeserving of His grace and mercy; we were as the lowly worm and the blood-sucking leech.  But through the death of Jesus Christ we received an eternal inheritance.  As Peter said, “To an inheritance, incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you” (1 Peter 1:4). The estate of Furrer’s leech is no more astounding than the inheritance you and I receive as lowly worms.
