Too often we measure our spirituality by isolated worship experiences. I certainly believe that we are to worship the Lord in “spirit and in truth,” but when we confine our spirituality to shouting, raising hands, and saying “amen,” we, in essence are saying that spirituality is performance-driven. Some people are introverted, quite, shy, and unlikely to be heard in a worship environment. Does that mean they are not spiritual? Of course not. Spirituality is measured by other criteria:
Our Likeness to Christ. Ultimately a person’s spiritual bar is measured by their likeness to Jesus. Walking with Christ is the heartbeat of spirituality. I would rather be around someone who exudes the presence of Christ, then someone who exudes themselves.
The Fruit of the Spirit. Anyone can say “amen” but only those who walk in the Spirit will bear the fruit of the Spirit. Spirituality is measured in our attitude, our responses, our decisions, and our treatment of others.
Obedience to the Word. Someone who walks in the Spirit has to comply with the Words of Christ. Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Serious devotion is measured by daily commitment, not just Sunday-morning worship. Don’t just “lip” it, live it!
