I was watching a fishing show not long ago and something very unusual occurred while the fishermen were riding in the boat –– a few fish starting jumping out of the water; one actually jumped right into the boat with the fishermen. The men explained that the “jumping fish” were trying to rid themselves of parasites that have attached to their scales. There are various theories why fish jump, but one thing is for certain – I have never gone fishing and had a fish jump right into my boat. The same is true when we go fishing for men.
When we fish for fish we are intentional, intrusive, and involved. What I mean is that we are going after them with hooks, lines, boats, rods, and nets. We never expect a fish just to jump in our arms.
There are some Christians who believe that “catching men” is the responsibility of the men – that is just as absurd as believing a fish is going to jump right into your boat. Of course, there are those rare times when fish will jump out of the water, but how many fish have you caught under those circumstances? Probably none and you probably never will.
Don’t expect someone to come up to you today and start talking about Jesus. We must be willing to “go and get them” if we want to win souls.
